about
"Nagasaki Swim grows, as does everything. The Rotterdam-based band around Jasper Boogaard celebrates its second budding with new music: ‘The Weight Pt. 2’ is the first single of an album set for release through Excelsior Recordings.
‘The Weight Pt. 2’ is an organic continuation of that with which Nagasaki Swim established itself in the spring of 2021: an utterly American indie folk sound reminiscent of LVL UP, Lomelda, and Bonny Doon that is just as firmly rooted in the north of Rotterdam. The Mirror, the debut album of Boogaard and friends, was well-received by Dutch music media and saw the band touring across the country.
That fertile soil has now spawned new sounds. In the summer of 2021, the band resided at recording studio Katzwijm for ten days, where they laid the foundation for a new album, Everything Grows. Those same sessions brought forth ‘The Weight Pt. 2’, the definitive proof that Nagasaki Swim is no longer the Jasper Boogaard vehicle it was originally, but a band – tight and true. ‘The Weight Pt. 2’ is big, plentiful, ever moving. Kat Kalkman’s piano playing and Molly Germer’s (Alex G, Hop Along) rousing strings suit Boogaard’s introspective lyrics – touching upon death and the decline of the human body. Death is on his mind, but still, the sun continues to shine, as Boogaard delicately balances the onerous with the everyday." - Ruben van Dijk
lyrics
Spent all of our days
Greener every moment now
Back into the rhythm
Slowly pushing all my thoughts
Death is on my mind
And it was your first funeral
Hope you felt OK
Pictured all my friends out there
Feeling in the body
But the body has its way
You left it there for something else
And nothing comes again
Spent all of our time
Breaking habits of the past
Back into the rhythm
Losing all my energy
Death is on my mind
Some things are just always there
And that’s OK
Picturing my friends out here
Feeling in the body
But the body has its way
You left it there for something else
and nothing comes again
Feeling in the body
But the body won’t come back
You left it there for something else
And never comes again
